Troubleshooting

Updated on Mar 13, 2026

With Performance Box Touch you can do Accel and Decel performance tests. If you are performing a test and the run gets aborted before the end conditions are met, the most likely cause is that there was a drop in satellites that invalidated the run.

Performance Box Touch will only present accurate results and will not predict data. If Performance Box Touch loses its satellite signal during a test run, that run will get aborted to provide correct data only. The data from the previous run will still get recorded to the SD card for later analysis.

It must make sure that the VBOX Touch has the optimum conditions for recording data. Follow the guidance below to avoid that performance tests being aborted in the future.

Tall buildings or trees can block GNSS signals, causing a reduction in the number and quality of satellites being tracked. The reduced number of satellites can lead to inaccurate position measurements and a noisy velocity signal.

GNSS works best in open areas. Avoid tree-lined roads.

If Performance Box Touch is struggling to acquire a satellite lock, you may need to perform a GPS coldstart. This may be necessary when the unit hasn’t been used for several days or has moved location significantly since it was last used.

To perform a coldstart, press the COLDSTART button in the Diagnostics Settings menu.

Performance Box Settings Diagnostics v1.5 (v2)
When you press the button, the unit will make an audible sound and you will see a ‘ PLEASE WAIT ’ message counting down from 3. Until the satellite lock has been acquired, the number of satellites will be displayed as ' 00 ' and the GPS status will show ‘ SEARCHING FOR SATELLITES ’. It will take approximately 25 to 30 seconds for the unit to reacquire the satellite lock.

If the battery (RLACS290) in Performance Box Touch does not charge, the LED on the rear of the unit isn't flashing, and the battery status in the top right of the screen is not visible when the battery is attached and receiving power from the USB port, the battery may have discharged below its internal cut-off voltage.

PB Touch Battery Front

Follow the steps below to try to fix this issue:

  1. Detach the battery from the Performance Box Touch unit. Plug the supplied USB cable (USB2-007241) into the micro-B USB socket on the battery. This port is on the top edge of the battery, near the LED and power buttons.
  2. Make sure that the USB charger you are using can provide at least 1 A and leave the battery to charge for at least 30 minutes to make sure that the cell has some charge to power the internal controller.
  3. If the LED on the battery is still not flashing after 30 minutes, keep the charger connected and press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds. The LED should glow faint red.
  4. Release the button. The LED should start to flash,  indicating that it is charging.
  5. We recommend that you leave the battery to charge until the LED flashes green, indicating a charge of at least 20%.

If the battery is still not working as expected, please contact Racelogic Support.

The 4 LEDs at the top of the unit provide visual feedback dependent on what process is being performed:

  • Accel/Decel Mode: If Alert at End is enabled, the LEDs will flash green for 0.5 s once the test end criteria are met.
  • Lap Timing Mode:
    • The LEDs provide a live reference lap speed comparison (Delta-V).
    • The LEDs will illuminate blue during the process of creating a Reference Lap.
    • When loading a Track Database file, the progress of the track database update is displayed via the LEDs; each lit LED will represent 25% of the process with all LEDs extinguishing when the process is complete.
    • When a Track Layout is changed, the LEDs will briefly flash green twice.
    • When a Finish Line is cleared, the LEDs will briefly flash green twice.
    • When a Standing Start is Enabled or Disabled, the LEDs will briefly flash green twice.
  • Speed Mode: If a Target Speed LED Alert has been set, the LEDs will flash green when the value is reached.
  • Screenshot: If a screenshot has been saved successfully, the LEDs will illuminate yellow in sequence from left to right to display the progress of writing to the SD card.
  • Reset: The LEDs will briefly flash green twice when a screen has been reset.
  • Battery (if installed): If the battery has run out of charge, the LEDs will flash red five times before the unit turns off.

The separate battery has its own LED next to the Power button. This will provide constant battery status information.

When using Lap Timing Mode on Performance Box Touch, it will display the currently selected track and available layouts based on the GPS location of the unit. If your Performance Box Touch cannot detect a track and is displaying a NO LIST AVAILABLE message in the Track Select option of the Lap Timing Settings, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

PB Touch No Track Available

Look at the guidance below. If Performance Box Touch is still not displaying tracks and you believe it should, please contact Racelogic Support.

If Performance Box Touch is displaying a flashing red satellite icon at the top of the screen, the unit is struggling to acquire a satellite lock. The unit needs a minimum of 4 satellites to calculate the position. You can see the current number of satellites detected in the Diagnostic Settings screen. You can find troubleshooting tips regarding Satellite Lock here.

Performance Box Touch has an inbuilt track database that contains circuits throughout the world. You can find a list of the currently supported circuits here. As the Performance Box Touch selects the track based on its GPS location, it will not display a track if you are not in the vicinity of a known track. If you would like to request that a new track map is added to the circuit database, please Contact Racelogic.

If your track is already included in the supported circuits, but Performance Box Touch is not able to detect the track despite being at the circuit and having a satellite lock, you may need to update its Track Map Database. You can find the latest Track Map Database file on the VBOX Motorsport Website. You upload it to the unit via the Lap Timing Settings menu by pressing the LOAD button behind TRACK DATABASE.

VBOX Touch Lap Timing Settings Track Database

You can find more information on how to update the Track Database on Performance Box Touch here.

If no local track is available, you can still use the Lap Timing Mode in Performance Box Touch by either creating a start/ finish line using the display when on the track, creating a start/ finish line in Google Earth or creating a start/finish line using a previously recorded a VBOX File on your computer.

There are several possible reasons why Performance Box Touch is not logging into the SD card.

Follow the guidance below, and if Performance Box Touch is still not logging as expected, please contact Racelogic Support.

When the SD Card Icon at the top of the screen is red, Performance Box Touch cannot detect an SD card or the SD card is full.

Make sure that the SD card is fully inserted into the side of the unit. There is an internal spring in the SD slot. You should be able to feel the SD card push and secure against this spring. If you have an issue with inserting the SD card, look inside the slot to make sure that nothing is blocking the way.

Performance Box Touch V2 is supplied with an 8 GB SDHC card in a FAT32 file format, which is the only file format it supports.

If you are looking to purchase a new SD card, we recommend that any card you use has a write speed of above 7 MB/s (4 MB/s is the absolute minimum) and a speed class of 10 (4 is the absolute minimum). We recommend that you use SD cards from quality brands such as Transcend, SanDisk, Kingston or Lexar to ensure the best results.

IMPORTANT
If you have an SD card that is formatted in the exFAT or NTFS file formats, you will have to reformat it to a FAT32 file system before it will work with a Performance Box Touch V2 unit.

Supplied or purchased SDHC cards are formatted in the FAT32 file format. This format is supported by Performance Box Touch V2.
Purchased SDXC cards will be formatted in exFAT or NTFS file formats; these formats are not supported by Performance Box Touch V2. Please reformat as per the instructions below.
  • FAT32 reformatting for media with sizes up to 32 GB can be done directly in Windows by right-clicking on the media and selecting 'Format'.

  • If you would like to format media with sizes above 32 GB into a FAT32 file system, you cannot do it directly in Windows as it is not the standard formatting for the file. However, there are many third-party software programs you can use to reformat media so that they will work correctly with our products - we recommend  This Tool as a free option from the SD card organisation.

Make sure that the SD card has available space. If it is full, delete or move files from the card.

When the SD Card Icon at the top of the screen is green, the SD card has been inserted correctly, has available space and is ready to log. When the unit is logging to the SD card, the Record Icon will appear at the top of the screen. If you expect the unit to be logging but it is not, this may be due to the Logging Strategy.

Depending on the set Logging Strategy in the General Settings area, the unit will either log continuously or when it detects movement (the latter is the default setting).

If the logging strategy is set to Moving (logging at speeds over 0.5 km/h) and the unit is not recording after detecting movement, you must make sure that the unit has a satellite lock, indicated by a solid green Satellite Icon at the top of the screen.

If you struggle to maintain a stable satellite lock (indicated by a flashing red satellite icon at the top of the screen), refer to the following troubleshooting page: Having Trouble Locking onto Satellites.

Note: By tapping on the SD Card Icon when it is green you will manually start or stop the data logging, and override the Configured Logging Strategy.

If Performance Box Touch displays a flashing red satellite icon at the top of the screen, the unit is struggling to acquire a satellite lock. It needs a least 4 satellites to calculate the position. You can see the current number of detected satellited on the Diagnostic Settings screen.

Please follow the guidance below. If Performance Box Touch still has trouble locking onto satellites, please contact Racelogic Support.

IMPORTANT
The first time you use the unit, it may take as long as 10 to 15 minutes to fully acquire satellites. After this initial acquisition, it will usually only take 1–2 minutes to acquire the satellite lock.

Performance Box Touch has an internal patch antenna. This means that where the unit has a clear view of the sky, you would not need an additional antenna in most circumstances. However, satellite signals can be influenced by various factors.

Performance Box Touch should be mounted on the windscreen in a suitable location and adjusted as necessary. You should minimise potential interference from features such as roof bars and windscreen wipers as much as possible.

PB Touch Windscreen

Some modern cars are fitted with a special windscreen that cuts down the amount of UV (Ultra Violet) rays that will be transferred through the windscreen. This helps to reduce glare. These windscreens are called athermic or UV Coated, and they will dampen/reduce GNSS signals coming through the windscreen. If you have an athermic windscreen, you will not receive the same quality signal that you would if the Performance Box Touch were outside of the car.

To check if you have an athermic windscreen, you can either contact the manufacturer of your vehicle or talk to the main authorised dealer who may be able to tell you. If you cannot confirm yes or no by doing this, another way to check is to power up your Performance Box Touch and hold it outside of the vehicle to receive a satellite fix. Use the Diagnostic Settings screen to see how many satellites it has detected. After noting this down, you can move the unit inside the car and see if the GNSS signal drops by 2 to 4 satellites. If this happens immediately, you probably have an athermic windscreen.

If you are using an external antenna (RLACS284) and the unit has trouble locking onto satellites, follow the checklist of typical solutions below:

Common problems with GNSS antennas are due to damage to the cable and the connector. You should place the cable so that it avoids tight angles, as this can damage the thin core.

  • Make sure that the antenna is placed in a position where it has an unobstructed view of the sky (see GPS Antenna Placement below).
  • Check the antenna connection to Performance Box Touch. Even small amounts of dirt in the socket can cause a significant reduction in the signal strength.
  • Check for damage to the cable, both at the plug and along the entire length.
  • If possible, try another known working antenna to confirm if the problem is with the functionality of your antenna.
  • Perform a GPS Coldstart and leave the unit powered up and in an open static position for at least 15 minutes.

To achieve optimum GNSS signal reception, you must make sure that the antenna is fitted to the highest point on the vehicle and away from any obstructions that may block satellite reception. The GNSS antenna works best with a metal ground plane (alternatively some silver foil or a metal plate beneath the antenna can improve the reception significantly if you don’t have a large metal roof).

Click here for more information on antenna placement.

Tall buildings or trees can block GNSS signals, causing a reduction in the number and quality of satellites being tracked. The reduced number of satellites can lead to inaccurate position measurements and a noisy velocity signal.
